Cricket Australia 2008-09 Umpire Panels announced
Cricket Australia (CA) today announced its 2008-09 Umpire Panels.
Steve Davis has been promoted from the CA International Panel to the expanded 12-man ICC Elite Panel (previously 10), joining fellow Australians Simon Taufel, Daryl Harper and Darrell Hair.
Davis’ promotion has resulted in Rodney Tucker becoming the first umpire to be elevated from CA’s Project Panel to the International Umpires Panel. The former New South Wales and Tasmania first-class cricketer has been nominated to the International Panel as a TV umpire and will also remain on CA’s National Umpires Panel.
There are three new faces on the 12-man National Umpires Panel, with Mick Martell (WA), Tony Ward (VIC) and Andrew Craig (WA) replacing Davis, Dave Orchard (QLD) and Tim Laycock (QLD).
Martell and Ward have progressed through the Cricket Australia umpiring pathway after officiating at the Emerging Players Tournament in Queensland last year. Martell was also cricket’s first Australia Sports Commission National Officiating Scholarship Program recipient.
While no longer on the National Umpires Panel, Laycock has been retained in CA’s umpire high performance pathway and will officiate at the Emerging Players’ Tournament in Queensland this year, the “gateway” program for umpires in the frame for selection to the national panel.
“Rodney Tucker’s nomination to the International Umpires Panel and the promotion of Mick Martell and Tony Ward to the national panel illustrates the successes of CA’s umpiring pathway,” Cricket Australia General Manager Cricket, Michael Brown, said.
“Steve Davis’ elevation to the ICC’s expanded Elite Panel is further evidence of Australia reputation for producing high-quality umpires.
“Cricket Australia’s umpires continue to lead the way in world cricket and we take great pride in their performances at first-class and international level.”
The selection and management of these the umpiring panels will be done under a new system next season managed by the Umpire High Performance Panel which is currently being formed.
